TEDxStoga: Perfection on a Plate: What I've Learned from 10 Years of Alternative Diet
Presented by Brian Greco, March 21, 2014 at TEDxStoga
In this presentation, I share my experience over the past 10 years with different alternative diets-vegetarianism, veganism, raw foodism, fruitarianism, and more-and the key takeaways and lessons I got from each.
Diet has been a passion of mine and driving force in my identity, and while I believe it has the power to shape our lifestyles for the better, I have also seen that many of the "prized" ways of eating in modern Western culture can end up becoming more burdensome than beneficial.
The core idea that I've come to embody is that perfectionism in diet not only defeats the purpose of healthy eating, but can create a disillusionment (and in many cases unsound nutrition) that is not what most people sign up for when they adopt a new ideology.
Having stepped from the norm of food culture, I hope to offer a unique perspective on food-something which is often overlooked but is so central to our experience physically, socially, and emotionally.

    I discovered Super L about a month ago. Not only is it inexpensive fruit (and some exotic fruits and veggies that local grocery stores don't carry), they have LIVE tanks with lobsters, crab, shrimp and clams. They also have amazingly fresh fish (clear eyes on the fish) and every type of Asian noodles you would want, rice, ramen, etc. Seasonings too! AND they have an awesome deli with bbq duck and tons of specialities. It's awesome! Prices are LOW in comparison - and they cater to small portion meats for the cook who just needs a touch... sorta like Blue Apron. Go with a list so you don't get overwhelmed!!

    I think its originated from Indonesia or Malaysia..bcoz the name itself came from the word 'duri' which means 'spikes', and 'an' its for plural purposes which means 'many'. So in Indo/malay language durian means 'a lot of spikes'. correct me if im wrong

    I have watched over 20 videos of durian eating today and I applaud the people for trying something unfamiliar. That being said, I am appalled that some of the durians that has been eaten are even sold as they have already gone bad. Like any fruits there is a shelf life for the durians. When the durian is opened, the inside between the chambers should be dry and white. If it has discoloured and damp/wet, it means the durian has started fermenting that is why some people comment that it taste like turpentine. Secondly, the bottom where the chambers of the durian converge is to be tight. If it is "open" it does not mean it is "ripe." It means the durian is not fresh and going bad/fermenting, I would never pay for a durian that has "open." Local durian sellers in Malaysia and Singapore would not be able to sell durians that are "open" as buyers would avoid them. So, an "open" durian is not a "ripe" durian. A durian that has fallen from a tree IS a ripe durian.

    so let me make it clear. the name Durian it self came after Indonesian or Malay word Duri, which means thorn because its outside formidable thorns so that is why it's called Durian. and actually it's native Indonesia and Malaysia then spread out across other south east Asia country like Thailand and Philippines. come and visit Indonesia if you want to try the best Durian on earth.

    i'm from malaysia. the durian you ate is over ripe. it tastes superbad in that bad condition, judging from the look of the skin of the durian. there is one type of durian, the "musang king" (musang = fox). it super tasty, i like from a young three than the old one though..

      Roger Canda how can we tell if it is ripe enough or just right? do we look for a certain kind of skin color?

    • @RogerCanda
      @RogerCanda 9 років тому

      I'm no expert to durian but the skin's colour is not a factor. I think that its more to the smell than skin colour. And also, sthe skin should be hard (not very hard, but hard), not like a rubber. Usually after it fall of the tree, you have to keep it for 1-2 days before you eat it.
